Robotic Surgery Preoperative Instructions

The time of your procedure may change. If your scheduled time changes, the facility will contact you and let you know what your new time is and when to arrive. PLEASE PLAN TO BE AVAILABLE FOR SURGERY AT ANY TIME THAT DAY

Clearance

  1. You may require an electrocardiogram (EKG) prior to your procedure. The EKG can be done with your primary care provider, cardiologist or at the hospital. You are responsible for getting the EKG done prior to your procedure or your procedure may be cancelled. The EKG is typically valid for 6 months.
  2. If you were instructed to obtain blood work, chest x-ray or medical or cardiac clearance, please contact your primary care provider to make arrangements.
  3. If you are diabetic, please notify the surgical scheduler.

Medications
If you are on any blood thinners, such as Eliquis (apixiban), Pradaxa (dabigatran) or warfarin (Coumadin), notify the surgery scheduler. You will need a plan from your prescribing doctor when to stop these medications before surgery and when to restart.

Stop one week before surgery

  1. Aspirin or aspirin-like compounds
  2. NSAIDS such as ibuprofen, Advil, Nuprin, Motrin, Bufferin, Celebrex, Anacin
  3. Vitamin E, multivitamin and fish oil
  4. GLPD-1 agonist injections such as Weygovy, Ozempic (semiglutide), Trulicity (dulaglutide), Byetta, Bydureon (exenatide), Victoza, Saxenda (litaglutide), Mounjaro (tirzapatide)

Stop 4 days before surgery
Steglatro (ertugliflozin)

Stop 3 days before surgery
SGLT-2 inhibitors such as Invokana (canagliflozin), Farxiga (dapagliflozin), Jardiance (empagliflozin)

Do not take the morning surgery

  1. GLPD-1 agonist medication by mouth such as Rybelsus (semiglutide)
  2. You may continue Tylenol (acetaminophen) through surgery.

Diet
Drink two ten ounce bottles of Ensure Pre-Surgery Clear Carbohydrate Drink (available on Amazon.com) or 20 ounces of Gatorade at 6 pm the evening prior to surgery. NO SOLID FOOD AFTER MIDNIGHT. You may continue to drink clear liquids up to two hours and thirty minutes before surgery.

Drink one ten ounce bottle of Ensure Pre-Surgery Clear Carbohydrate Drink (available on Amazon.com) or 12 ounces of Gatorade two hours and thirty minutes before surgery (four hours before surgery if diabetic). NOTHING BY MOUTH FOR TWO HOURS PRIOR TO SURGERY.

Clear liquids
Tea and coffee (no creamer or milk)
Carbonated drinks
Fruit flavored drinks
Strained fruit juices: apple, grape, white grape, lemonade (no pulp)
Clear broth, consommé
Clear flavored gelatin such as Jell-O

Clothing
Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing the day of surgery.
Leave jewelry and valuables at home.

Transportation
A responsible adult (18 years and older) will need to provide transportation after your procedure.
Surgical facilities do not permit patients to take taxis or any other public transportation after procedures.

Insurance
Please contact your insurance company directly for any questions regarding coverage or payment. Our office will obtain preauthorization from your insurance company; however, preauthorization is not a guarantee of coverage or payment. It is your responsibility to determine if you have coverage.
