Postperative Instructions
Ureteroscopy

  1. After anesthesia, begin with clear liquids. Avoid any heavy meals on the day of the procedure. Depending on how you feel the following day, you may resume the diet you normally follow.

  2. Do not drive a car or operate machinery for 24 hours after anesthesia.

  3. Do not consume alcohol, tranquilizers, sleeping medication, or any non-prescribed medication for 24 hours after anesthesia or if taking a pain medication.

  4. Do not make important decisions or sign any important papers in the next 24 hours after anesthesia.

  5. You may notice the need to urinate more frequently. You may also notice a sense of urgency, which is the feeling that you have to get there right away. There may be some pain or burning with urination. It is possible that you may see some blood with urination. It may take several days for these symptoms to resolve.

  6. You may resume you normal activity.

  7. You may shower or bathe as you normally do.

  8. You may get a prescription for pain pills. You can take pain pills as often as needed according to the directions on the bottle. If pain is severe and not relieved by pills, you may need to go to the Emergency Room for pain intravenous (IV) medication.

IF A STENT HAS BEEN PLACED:

  1. You may experience ache or discomfort in the back with urination.

  2. There may be a marked amount of frequency and urgency at first, which subsides after several days.

  3. Avoid strenuous activity while the stent is in. This includes activities such as golf, tennis, cutting the grass, stretching exercises and so forth. You should avoid lifting anything over 20 lbs. during this time.

  4. Call the office to make an appointment regarding the timing of stent removal.

  5. If you are given a prescription for other medications, follow the instructions on the bottle.
